Festival Time

 I've mentioned in previous posts that I have a choral music background and one of my favorite groups is the Philippine Madrigal Singers. So it's such a joy that next year will be a celebration of half a century of beautiful music through the Andrea O. Veneracion Intentional Choral Festival:

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is pleased to announce the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival, Manila, 2013, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, a resident company of the CCP.

The festival honors the founder of the Philippine Madrigal Singers National Artist for Music, Professor Andrea O. Veneracion, an esteemed choirmaster and choral clinician who is instrumental in the promotion of choral music all over the country.


CATEGORIES
The competition is open to choirs which will qualify in the following categories:

Category A: Folk Music

Category B: Vocal Ensemble

Category C: Chamber Choir

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDELINES

CATEGORY A: Folk Music

Repertoire
A minimum of three (3) choral works must include the following:

For FOREIGN CHOIRS:
• two (2) choral compositions/arrangements using folksongs/folk material from the choir’s home country or region;
• one (1) Filipino folk choral composition/arrangement.

For FILIPINO CHOIRS:
• one (1) Filipino folk song;
• one (1) folk song from the Asian region;
• one (1) folk song outside the Asian Region.

Guidelines

1. Open to mixed choirs (SATB) and to choirs with equal voices.
2. No age limit.
3. Minimum number of singers is four (4). Maximum number of singers is forty (40).
4. The total performance time, excluding entrance and exit, must not exceed 13 minutes.
5. Any additional song(s) must be freely chosen folk choral composition/arrangement.
6. Pieces may be sung a cappella or may be accompanied by pitchless traditional instruments.
7. National costumes are welcome.
8. Choreography is allowed during the performance.
9. The use of microphones and other sound amplification is not allowed.

CATEGORY B: Vocal Ensemble
Repertoire
Freely chosen pieces (excluding folk song/folk material).
Guidelines
1. Open to mixed choirs (SATB) and to choirs with equal voices.
2. No age limit.
3. Minimum number of singers is four (4). Maximum number of singers is twelve (12).
4. Choirs which have more than 12 singers can choose only one (1) group of four to twelve (4-12) singers to represent the choir in this category.
5. The total performance time, excluding entrance and exit, must not exceed 13 minutes.
6. Pieces may be sung a cappella or may be accompanied by pitchless instruments.
7. The use of microphones and other sound amplification is not allowed.

CATEGORY C: Chamber Choir
Repertoire
A minimum of four (4) songs must include the following:
• one (1) from the Renaissance/Early Baroque Period
• one (1) from the Romantic Period
• one (1) from the 20th – 21st century
• one (1) obligatory piece

Guidelines
1. Open only to mixed (SATB) choirs.
2. No age limit.
3. Minimum number of singers is twenty (20). Maximum number of singers is forty (40). However, for participating choirs with more than twenty (20) singers, the number of singers may be reduced to at least twenty (20) singers for the Renaissance piece.
4. The total performance time, excluding entrance and exit, must not exceed 18 minutes.
5. Any additional song(s) must be freely chosen composition/arrangement for chamber choir.
6. All pieces must be sung a cappella, or may be accompanied by pitchless instruments.
7. The use of microphones and other sound amplification is not allowed.

RULES AND REGULATIONS • Only choirs that have been in existence for at least two (2) years are allowed to join.
• All applications will be screened by the Artistic Committee who will determine the acceptance of the choir in the competition.
• Only legally printed music, published editions, or duly authorized manuscripts must be used in the competition.
• It is possible for choirs to participate in all categories. However, no competition piece should be repeated.
• No recorded accompaniment is allowed.
• Performance time will not be interrupted by applause.
• Singing time must be strictly observed.
• Audio/video recording during competitions is not allowed.

ADJUDICATION
A jury of five (5) internationally renowned adjudicators – one (1) from Europe, one (1) from North America, one (1) from South America, one (1) from Africa/Australia and one (1) from the Philippines will evaluate the competitors. All decisions of the jury are final.

CRITERIA
40% Technical proficiency (intonation, rhythm, dynamics, diction, choral blend, balance)
40% Musicality (interpretation, expression, style, loyalty to the score)
20% Over-all artistic impression

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION: Deadline is on April 2, 2013

• Fully accomplished application form (downloaded from the CCP website)
• An audio/video recording of the choir recorded within the last two (2) years in CD/DVD format
• A recent profile and photo of the choir taken within the last six (6) months
• A recent profile and photo of the conductor taken within the last six (6) months

To be submitted after notice of the choir’s acceptance:
• Repertoire per category
• Six (6) clear original copies of each of the scores
• Registration Fee

For Foreign Choirs:
• For one (1) category – $150
• For two (2) categories – $200
• For three (3) categories – $250

For Filipino Choirs:

• For one category – P2,000
• For two categories – P2,500
• For three categories – P3,000
